Basic and Detailed Manuals:
- Motorola changed the way they organize service manuals for theSpectra radio models. They are split into a large Detailedservice manual and and smaller Basic service manuals.
- The Detailed service manual has the component levelschematics for the VHF, UHF, 800 MHz and 900 MHz radios. It also hasmore in depth theory of operation and step-by-step troubleshootingflowcharts for component level troubleshooting and repair.
- The Basic service manuals do not have the schematics(with an exception, see below), but they do have the specifications, model charts, some generalized theory overview, front panelprogramming/adjustment instructions, plus troubleshooting andrepair instructions. The troubleshooting and repair instructions aredescriptions on how to identify failures and radio chassis disassembly/ reassembly, not anything like the component level Detailedservice manual troubleshooting flowcharts. These manuals do have a fewof the Interconnect Board, somecontrol cable, ribbon cable, VIP port accessory schematics and someconnector pin outs.
- As you can see, both the Detailed service manual and theappropriate Basic service manual is required for completedocumentation of each band of radio. For example: the 68P81074C40900MHz Basic service manual will allow you to decode a 900 MHzSpectra radio model number, identifyerror codes, what part of the radio to troubleshoot, even show youwhere to put the heat sink compound on the PA deck when reassemblingthe radio, but the component schematics, component level theoryexplanations and component level troubleshooting flowcharts are onlyfound in the Detailed service manual.
Early and Later Version Manuals:
- There are also two complete, different, versions. An earlyversion and a later version. As far as the Detailedservice manuals go, the differences are very hard to find. Most of thechanges are to some board part numbers and some part lists. Unless youactually perform component level troubleshooting and repair, it willnot really make any difference which version you use for a generalreference (assuming you need or want one at all). The earlyDetailedmanual is the only source I know of for the HLN6020 and HLN6078 controlhead, plus the HLN6019B, HLN6063A and HLN6100A Hear Clear schematics(these are all significantly different from their later version). The laterDetailed manual is the only source I know of for theHLN6150A Hear Clear schematic.
- The Basic service manuals have the same setup with earlyand later versions. Unless you are looking for specific modelcharts, feature matrixes, etc., use whichever you have on hand forgeneral reference use. The Spectra II (i.e. Spectra E) information isonly found in the later manuals. At the time of this writing, the VHF, UHF and 800 MHz earlyBasic service manualshave been phased out and are no longer available from Motorola.
- The Detailed Supplements can be used with either the earlyor later version of the Detailed service manual. Also, some parts of the 68P80102W79 SPECTRA 9000 early supplement can be usedwith the laterDetailed service manual.
- The individual Interconnect Boardschematics are scattered through the Detailed, Basic, supplements and other control head manuals. There is no definitivesingle source. Various early manuals are the only source ofdocumentation for the oldest Interconnect Boards.
- A Motorola Mobile Radio parts catalog lists the earlyversion manuals as being for the 'A Model' radios and the laterversion manuals as being for the 'B Model' radios.

- The manuals with bold part numbers are the ones I haveactually checked. The other manual numbers come from Spectra manuals orthe AccessPoint web site.
- *Note: several manuals are requiredto completely document a VRS. The end of the VRS model number (AASP02, AWSP02, BASP02 and BWSP02 ) willdetermine which manuals are needed. The AASP02and BASP02 are VRS units and are housedin an External Options Housing. The AWSP02and BWSP02 are combination Siren/PA andVRS units, that are both housed in a Siren/PA housing. There is a fieldconversion for placing a VRS circuit board inside a Siren/PA housingand making it an AWSP02 or BWSP02 (a 26-06360T01 low profile shield isused in the field conversion). Here is a link to the VRS model numbers.
- The PAC-PL and PAC-RT are older vehicle repeater systems. ThePAC-PL has no priority resolution ability to prevent multiple mobiletransmitters from interfering with each other. The PAC-RT has apriority resolution scheme which is compatible with the later Systems9000 VRS priority resolution (PAC repeaters are not programmable - youneed Vibrasponder tone reeds). A special NKN6442A cable is needed tointerface a PAC-PL or PAC-RT with a Spectra radio (I do not know whatelse may be required?).
- The DTMF Decoder manual documents the optional HLN6151A DTMFdecoder circuit board which is required for decoding DTMF. The HLN6150AHear Clear circuit board also has a DTMF decoder circuit traces builtinto the circuit board (the Hear Clear circuit board is documented inthe later version Detailed Service manual).
- The 68P80102W55-D manual has 938Securenet Physical Security Housing Option information that wasleft out of the 68P81081E65 Spectra Desktop Station manual.
